Wines
We are looking for grapes that want to burst from their skins and tell a story not yet heard. Something special, something different, something unique. And most definitely something we would want to drink ourselves.
We are therefore a pit picky before agreeing that grapes should be picked for one of our wines. We are starting small, and will grow slowly.
The maiden vintage of Meier Family Wines was in 2024. We bottled a single white wine – a Roussanne we call TWEE. (More about TWEE below)
And in years to come we are planning on adding more, as our discoveries lead us.
TWEE 2024
Grape Variety – Roussanne
This 100% Roussanne wine is made from hand-picked grapes grown in Simonsberg – Stellenbosch, fermented wild in 300L seasoned barriques and aged on its lees for a further 7 months. Roussanne has been termed the “red grape wearing a white jacket”, which perfectly sums it up. It is a white varietal common to the Rhone area of France, that produces complex, full-bodied wines with layers of flavour to them.
It also has a freshness from its acidity, has good structure and a long finish. The structure and length make it a white wine for all seasons and occasions. Pair it with fish, creamy pasta dishes, and spicy foods. It goes well with cheese, especially a blue cheese or baked camembert.
It drinks exceedingly well now but can also be aged for a decade. If you like Viognier, or a Blanc Fume or Chardonnay – this will definitely interest you!
Nose: Golden delicious apple, pears, white peach, mango, ginger, fresh spice, wooden herbs like lemongrass and white flowers.
Palate: True to the nose, with layered flavours of apples, pear, peach, nectarine, spice and brioche bread. Honey and cream add a touch of sweetness.
Finish: The finish is fresh and long, coating the whole mouth with creamy layers of flavour.
And the name TWEE?
- TWEE is the Afrikaans term meaning TWO (2)
- This is the second wine we make – the first was a Pinotage made in 2018
- In 2024, our maiden vintage, we celebrated our second wedding anniversary
- Life gives everyone second chances
- We only made two barrels of this wine, making each bottle super exclusive
- And it is nod to diversity and heritage – two cultures in our small family (Afrikaans and Polish), but one love for wine. Afrikaans gets the shout-out and naming rights in this time
And if you look closely at the label, you’ll see the pictures are all of pairs of things – people, family (like my daughter and her hubby in the background), bicycles, shoes, any item that can be found in two’s. And every year the label changes just a bit, with some new images making it onto the bottle. That way, every year the bottle of TWEE will also tell a different story, not just by the wine, but also with the label.
Review: From Roussanne off mature vines, natural ferment/7 months on lees in older oak. 24 almost startlingly rich, white Rioja-like vanilla & butter overlay to pear & apple (fresh & bruised, flesh & skin), intense smoke & nut, all lifted & guided to a clean, satisfying finish by vibrant acidity.
Meier Family Wines Write-up: Both wonderful and scary’ is Somerset West-based Conrad Meier’s experience of making wine. ‘Like writing a book and putting it out there for others to enjoy (or not!)’. Wife, winemaker and fellow wine lover Natalia inspired the founding of a family brand, where the couple work with seasoned winemakers to translate their vision into reality. They’ll keep looking for and bottling ‘interesting and scarce grapes of high quality.
